Open Source Software

The following is a list of Open Source Software useful to those in the design and planning industry. Keep in mind there is no such thing as a direct replacement of proprietary software. The open source alternative listed here are similar to, but not exact copies of their proprietary counterparts. Each program has its advantages and disadvantages. The important thing is to find what works best for your needs.

In addition, you may notice multiple programs listed in each catagory. Choice and variety are a good thing. In fact, that's one of the strengths of the open source software community. Again, the important thing to do is look at each option and decide what best fits your need.

One thing to keep in mind is that because most open source software is not created by a parent company, it often lacks professional support. However, almost every open source software platform has some sort of internet forums, email list, or chat room where you can get help. If you are looking for assistance, check out the sotware's website.

Of course, also check the licensing of each software before using it commercially.

Very generally and loosely defined as waste landscapes, Berger begins by describing the process by which these spaces develop and explains why they result from normal, healthy urban growth. Berger draws from some of the texts that are credited with forming the foundation of the emergent field of landscape urbanism such as Lars Lerup's Stim and Dross: Rethinking the Metropolis and Ignasi de Sola-Morales Terrain Vague. ... The book is very heavy for it's size, and the pages have a texture more like plastic than paper. The reason for this is that the book IS different. It's not made out of paper, rather the synthetic pages are made of plastic resins and inorganic fillers. ...
