Performance Specification

a type of specification in which the performance of a material, system, element, device, equipment or assembly is described in detail, but the manner in which it is built is not specifically described.

This type of specification is often used when the design intent is to closely match existing conditions, and gives the contractor a great deal of latitude in the installation while taking much of the control from the designer.
